One of the things I love about being a commercial and advertising photographer based in Glasgow are the sheer variety of subjects you are asked to photograph.
I find myself immediately becoming interested in the subject I’m being asked to photograph. It’s part of the challenge and one of the most rewarding aspects of commercial and advertising photography.
When Stagecoach were searching for commercial and advertising photographers in Glasgow, they approached Blink Imaging to help out with a problem they continually face which is lack of images they have of their buses. One of the main problems is that the buses are in constant service, so it’s not possible to stage a shoot. The other key problem I learned is due to bus-spotters, who apparently have previously complained that the photographs of buses appearing on various timetables were not of buses that actually ran on those particular routes. The challenge was therefore to photograph buses live on their actual routes.
As a photographer, this does place a number of constraints on what you can do. You have no control over the environment in terms of people, traffic, direction of the sun etc. In fact you don’t have control over any of the factors you would normally rely on. I therefore decided the only option was to research the routes and identify locations where the sun would be on the right position and where there wouldn’t be too many other distracting factors such as people, other traffic etc. Once I established all this it was simply a case of waiting for the next bus. Fortunately they didn’t all come at the same time!
