We were approached by a specialist bakers in Glasgow who were wanting some commercial food product photography of their range of gluten free breads.
The brief was to produce a series of photographs of their food products, which could be used for a variety of commercial uses such online advertising, websites, social media and editorial use in press and magazines.
The client wanted their food products to stand out and there was also a need for room for text and captions to be added. As photographers with a lot of experience in commercial food product photography, we opted for a simple white background, which leaves a nice clean space for other things to be added. The addition of hands holding the products provided some impact to the photographs and gave them a human element.
Although all the shots were shot in an identical way, subtle changes were made in the lighting to bring out the best in the products.
You don’t necessarily need to do anything complex to create a good photograph but even with simple images a lot of care needs to go into their composition and lighting, probably even more so as you are working with very few elements. Consequently, everything has to look perfect, the product, the hands, the position of the hands and the clothing. Get any one of these wrong and it could ruin the whole image.

Although the final images might look quite straightforward they were actually quite difficult to set up. To get the right angle of the hands, the model had to be standing up, which also meant the camera had to be up quite high to capture it. Fortunately, in our photographic studio in Glasgow, we have a large camera stand plus number of steps and ladders with allow us to accommodate unusual situations like this.
Other tweaks we made included reinforcing the cardboard trays so they had a perfect shape and pinning the sleeves of the model’s tops so they fitted properly and didn’t have too many creases.
