As a photographer, one thing that’s surprised me during the current lock down is that I am still  getting work, particularly product photography. This is very easy to carry out in my Glasgow studio with the current lock down measures as it doesn’t involve having to meet anyone and I can carry out the work alone.

Talking to my web developer Malcolm Laurie, he was telling me that he’s incredibly busy as one of the priorities of clients during the lock down is making sure that their websites are updated. Not only does this mean a lot of work for web developers but a knock on effect for photographers like myself is that product photography is often required, especially for e-commerce sites.

Product photographs of colourful diaries

This shot was taken to show the full range of colours available for this particular diary

A leading manufacturer of diaries and stationary products approached me just before the lockdown to photograph their new range of diaries for their website.

Fortunately, all the shots were fairly simple, requiring a plain white background so all they had to do was courier them to me so I could photograph them in isolation at my Glasgow studio.

Product photography of an open diary

A variety of shots were taken of the products from different angles for use in different applications.

In a few months time we’re hoping to do some lifestyle photography which will show the products in use. Even if the current social distancing measures remain in place we will be able to do this by creating small set ups in the studio and then sharing shots with the client as they are shot so they can comment on them.

.Although photographing products against a white background is usually fairly simple in lighting terms small adjustments always need to be made for features such as the gold lettering on the front of the diary.
