Caledonia Trucks were urgently needing professional aerial drone photography to cover their sites in Ayr, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Nairn.
As we are fully licensed operators of a UAV (Drone) with a great deal of experience in this area we are always ready to go, even at short notice.
Previously, aerial photographs such as this were only possible from a plane. A drone can do this for a fraction of the cost.
This type of professional aerial drone photography also involved ground based photography, as they wanted to highlight the service bay facilities at their various sites. As we are also photographers with experience of photographing commercial premises, it is very easy for us to combine aerial and architectural photography in the one shoot.
Being able to combine aerial and ground based photography is of great benefit to clients who can have both done at the same time.
As with all exterior photography it is crucial to get the right weather, especially for drone photography. Not only do you need dry conditions but you also want to avoid strong winds. When undertaking this type of work we keep a constant eye on the forecast and then make a decision a day or two beforehand. One thing that was particularly challenging here is that it involved 4 locations at other ends of the country. Ayr and Glasgow could easily be slotted in as they are close to our studio but Aberdeen and Elgin would require an overnight stay, so there was no option of going back if the weather wasn’t right. Fortunately, there was a perfect break in the weather, so we set off and stayed overnight in Aberdeen to take advantage of perfect weather in the morning before driving to Elgin in the afternoon.

The other most important factor with aerial drone photography is to make two risk assessments, one prior to photographing the location to determine what potential risk factors there might be and another on the day, so see if there are any local factors that might pose a risk to the operation of the drone or people. Fortunately, all the locations were quite large, so we were able to operate within the footprint of the site without having to overfly adjoining properties.
Due to the time of year, the weather was particularly cold. This can affect battery performance but with the newer drone that we operate there is sufficient spare charge in the battery for it to operate safely in these conditions. The only thing that doesn’t is your hands so a pair of gloves were essential!
