We were recently asked to do architectural photography and aerial drone photography for a couple of housing developments, one for a housing association based in Edinburgh and another for a house builder, based in Glasgow.

As photographers who are fully licensed operators of a commercial drone for aerial photography we are easily able to combine architectural and aerial photography in the one shoot, giving a unique perspective of a development both from the ground and the air.

This summer has been particularly challenging weather-wise as there have been so few decent days when it’s been possible to get good architectural and aerial photography. In order to ensure we get the right weather we constantly check it until we can be sure of the best conditions.

This aerial drone shot was taken from about 200 feet and gives a good sense of the scale of the development including proximity to the railway line and station.

Prior to doing any aerial photography, we do a risk assessment. This identifies potential risks and any limitations. In the case of the development in Edinburgh, it was very close to a railway line so we had to keep a safe operating distance from that. The client wanted to show the proximity of the development to the station but due to the railway fencing it was difficult to show this clearly from ground level. Even with the safety limitations, the aerial shots taken with the drone showed this perfectly.

For the housing development in Alva, Stirlingshire we were keen to show the proximity of the houses to the Ochil Hills. Again, the drone was perfect for this.

When photographing developments like these, we like to take detail shots as well as wider shots of the development. As well as showing specific architectural features of a building, these types of photographs also add to the overall impression of the development and work particularly well in annual reports, brochures and websites.
