When Fraser Suites were looking for interior photographers in Glasgow they approached us to photograph their serviced apartments in Glasgow city centre.

Fraser Suites are an international brand with apartments all over the world. They are aimed at the upper end of the market where clients are looking for luxury accommodation, often for extended stays of several weeks or months, although tourists can also use them for short city breaks. As interior photographers one of the challenges of photographing the apartments were the dark interiors. Although this aesthetic is great in design terms, from a photographer’s viewpoint it is quite difficult as you want to capture the ambiance of the interiors whilst also make making sure they can be seen clearly.

This is the main staircase for the apartments which also serves as a seating area. Although very cosy, this area was very dark to photograph so we used portable lights to balance the lighting and bring out certain features.

In order to achieve this we use portable studio lighting which is easy to set up and can be carefully hidden in discreet areas. This allows us to control the mood and the lighting without overpowering the ambient lighting. The end result is more balanced without it looking overly lit.

This is the main lounge and kitchen area of one of the serviced apartments.

Another key ingredient of professional interior photography are professional lenses. We use specialised architectural tilt/shift lenses to keep all the verticals correct. This is one element which often makes the difference between an amateur snap and a professional photograph.

This is the main bedroom in one of the apartments. Although the rooms were very clean we did some minor retouching to some marks on the furniture.

Although all these elements help create professional looking shots, the final element is retouching. Although the apartments were all very clean and tidy there were a few minor marks on furniture and walls from general use, so any minor imperfections were retouched. We also removed things like distracting power cables from lamps and telephones.

Although all the apartments have their own kitchen areas, the accommodation has a cafe where self service breakfasts are served. It also serves as a place to have a coffee or meet up with other guests during the day.

One surprising element of the serviced apartments was the cafe area which provides self service breakfast in the morning and acts as a coffee bar and meeting place during the day. It also proved to be an extra perk on the day as we were kept going with fresh coffee and cookies!
