Howden Electric specialise in manufacturing industrial immersion heaters. As industrial photographers in Glasgow, we are always fascinated by the range of specialist products being manufactured by companies like Howden Electric. When you think about immersion heaters you tend to think of domestic water tanks which are found in airing cupboards or lofts. What do you do if you have a crew of a few hundred living on an oil rig in the middle of the North Sea who all require hot showers 24 hours a day!

This is the kind of problem which Howden Electric help solve for their clients. One particular dilemma they had, was how to get good professional photographs of their products, many of which can only be moved by a small crane.
Fortunately, we have a lot of experience in photographing industrial products on location. In order to do this we set up a background and lights on location in their factory, which made it easy for them to provide all the products required for the shoot rather then having to transport them to our studio.
We set up a studio on location to photograph the products. This was easier than the client having to transport them to our studio.
Our expertise in this area also meant that we were fully aware of the health and safety requirements and made sure the area we were operating in was clearly marked with hazard tape. Another extra requirement due to the Covid restrictions meant that we had to operate socially distanced whilst also wearing masks.
We had to be very aware of health and safety requirements whilst photographing welding.
One final requirement of the brief was to take some shots of their staff at work. This is another area which requires a great deal of expertise, as it involves photographing people in an industrial environment. This requires a flexible approach, using the minimum of equipment and quick set ups, whilst also being aware of hazards such as welding torches.
In order to photograph industrial processes as they happen you need to be able to work very quickly.
At the end of the shoot Howden Electric were delighted with the shots, especially of their industrial immersion heater which was whisked off to the North Sea as soon as the shoot was completed!
