As ghost mannequin product photographers in Glasgow, it’s always very rewarding to meet new clients who are developing a new brand or range.
Robertson’s of Scotland approached us to produce ghost mannequin product photography of their new range of exclusive handmade jumpers, jackets and accessories.
Also known as invisible mannequins, ghost mannequins are so called because they let customers see how clothing looks when it is being worn. During post production, the mannequin is removed so you can’t see it, hence the name ‘ghost or invisible mannequin’.

Even though the lighting is usually even, subtle adjustments need to be made to allow details to be seen.
Although the images look quite simple when displayed on a website, they are actually a lot more complex to photograph than you might think. Even, though they are generally evenly lit, some subtle variations in the lighting set up are required as varying surfaces and colours reflect the light differently.
Robertson’s products were quite challenging, as the main colour is black. The lighting therefore had to be adjusted so the form and texture of the clothing could still be seen without looking like a black blob.

Garments like shawls are quite hard to do as ghost mannequins due to the fact that they don’t have any pre-defined shape.
In order to capture the interior of the clothing, where the mannequin is hiding it, such as around the neck, the interior needs to be photographed separately and then added back in in post production.
We use specialist ghost mannequins deigned for the purpose of photography with removable sections but even though this helps the process it is still usually necessary to photograph the interiors separately.

The interior of the garment is photographed separately and then added back in post production.
As well as ghost mannequins, Robertson’s had a range of bags and other accessories which required more conventional product photography against a white background. As with the clothing, this still required subtle adjustments for each product.

As well as tops, bottoms and full body ghost mannequins we cam also do clothing items such as socks and hats.
Robertsons are currently marketing their new range via shows and specialist shops, so you might get to see them if you are out and about this summer. You can also view their range online.
